Subject:When did this happen?
Time:11:36 pm.
Mood: confused.
Music:The Colbert Report.
Oh crap. Kurt Vonnegut died last night due to brain injuries sustained in a fall a few weeks back. I didn't see this news anywhere until there was a small tribute to him at the end of the Daily Show. American news seems to be all about Don Imus and the Anna Nicole Smith baby stuff. Canadian news is about hockey and the soldiers we lost the other day.

Subject:Better vision to see flayed skin
Time:1:05 am.
Mood: Craving onion rings....
I think this is my first post since September. I'm not sure why I don't use LJ more often. I keep thinking of potential posts and partially write them in my head but then never get around to actually writing them out on paper... err... pixels. I figure that I should write something, anything, just for the sake of writing. I statements promote clarity and assertiveness.

So today I finally got my new glasses after making three calls over the last two days to find out where they are. It's only a slight change in prescription but it's a pretty big difference when it comes to crispness and distance. Plus they're smaller and trendy looking and Baltar-esque. I should probably take pictures. Perhaps tomorrow, after I get a haircut.

I also (finally) went to see Body Worlds at Science World. After almost getting blown away by the wind I made it into the building a little after 3:00 and got a ticket for the 3:30 show. It wasn't super crowded then, but apparently all the tickets for 5:00 and later had already been sold out. I'm not really sure what I think about the show. It was interesting and all but it was lacking some sort of 'wow' factor that I was seemingly expecting. I think I would have liked to have known more about the people on display. Not their names and life stories and such, but at least their age, job, and fitness level; that way you have a little more idea of what you're looking at. However, it's their policy not to reveal any of that. The closest info they gave was pointing out when certain organs were diseased or oversized or otherwise irregular. Plus the slices of the 300 pound man who died at the age of 52 or so. It would have also been nice if there were more animals. They had the blood vessels of a rooster and a lamb but that doesn't compare to the exhibit of the man riding a horse that was on display in Germany. Oh well.

And the gift shop: lots of crap. You're not allowed to take any pictures (presumably to promote souvenir book sales) since the doctor who puts on the show owns the copyright to the images of all the exhibits. He's even tried suing other museum tours that had bodies in similar positions. But oh, what crappy souvenirs they had. Lots of stupid looking shirts ranging from a drawing of a skeleton sticking its butt out with the caption 'Skeleton Got Back' (they actually had lots of similar shirts with the same skeleton in different poses), to the Body Worlds North American Tour t-shirts which didn't seem to include Vancouver on their list of cities.

Well, it's getting late and I'm getting tired and my writing is getting ungood so I think I'll leave it at this. Hopefully I post again before another four months pass.

EDIT:
Forgot to comment on the weather. I missed most of it since I was inside Science World for a lot of the craziness (other than the aforementioned wind) and was in my basement playing Shadow of the Colossus when the evening snow hit. Though a lot of the snow is still sticking around for me to see and it's supposed to be worse tomorrow. Plus I saw the lights flicker several times today though, thankfully, the power never went out. It's the End of Days here people. Stanley Park is probably going to end up as little more than a pile of twigs by the time winter is over.

I'm not sure why I didn't know about this before but I just read that the actor Mako died. I've known of him mainly through his numerous M*A*S*H appearances (where he played a different character each time), his guest spot on an A-Team episode, and as Aku on Samurai Jack. Apparently he will be the voice of Splinter in the upcoming CGI Ninja Turtles movie. The director announced the role during the San Diego Comic-Con, back in July, and then Mako died the next day. However, it seems that he already recorded all of his dialogue so the role will stay his.

Subject:Crikey?
Time:2:48 pm.
I just read that Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter, has died.

It's probably no surprise, but he was killed by an animal, though he apparently didn't intentionally provoke this one at all. He was snorkeling in the waters off of Australia, filming a documentary about dangerous marine life. While he was swimming above a stingray, the animal suddenly reared into a defensive position and raised its barb above itself. Irwin was too close to get out of his way and the barb happened to pierce directly into his heart. His death was caught on film which will become evidence in a coroner's inquest.

So, I just downloaded Google Talk to take a look at it (seeing as how I don't seem to know anyone else who uses it) and it seems pretty bare bones. Does anyone know if there's anything special or does it ends at voice chat and a connection to your gmail account?

Subject:CBC axes Street Cents
Time:8:53 pm.
CBC Television has cancelled Street Cents, the consumer affairs show aimed at teenagers.

CBC News

For 17 years the Street Cents gang reviewed products and discussed issues relevant to younger viewers, from video games to emergency contraception.

The show, produced out of Halifax, has won national and international awards, including seven Geminis and an international Emmy.

But the CBC says its target audience of preteen and teen viewers has dwindled over the past few years.

The last episode will air Oct. 1.

Okay, I just had a random thought. Many religious right-wingers and fundamentalists seem to have trouble accepting evolution because whichever old book they believe in says otherwise. However, haven't we seen/recorded evolution over the past few hundred years in the form of animal husbandry, specifically dog breeding? Sure, dog breeding hasn't produced a new species (as far as I know), but it has produced breeds that are incredibly distinct from each other. And some of them, especially those bred in North America, didn't exist until the last couple of centuries. Just because they haven't lived long enough to see these changes and developments with their own eyes, how can people ignore the historical records that, yes, animals can change or 'evolve' over time and that god didn't create every type of animal 6000 years ago.

Saturday night I went to the Sha-Lin Noodle House for dinner. It's the second time I've been there and I once again enjoyed their tasty, well-priced food. I wish that I lived closer to them though as I would end up walking to eat there or get take out quite a bit. The moral of the story: fresh noodles are good.

Subject:Who wants a free night of fun?
Time:4:36 pm.
So, once again, I have come into possession of a four pack of VIP tickets for Playland's VIP night. I suppose that makes them standard tickets for VIP only night.

Once of these tickets gets you: free entrance to the park; you get to ride all the rides for free as many times as you want; you get a free hotdog, drink, and something else (I can't remember but I think it might be a cotton candy or something); you get a single free play at one of the carny games; and the park isn't nearly as crowded as it normally is since it's limited to folks with these tickets.

So one ticket is going to me, one ticket is conditionally going to Ben, and that leaves two tickets completely up for grabs. Let me know if you're interested.

...

I was about to post this before I realized that it would be helpful to say when all this is happening. The night is this upcoming Wednesday, the 21st from 6 until 10 PM. And I can likely provide rides there and back to those who need them.

Does anyone know of a store, other than Ikea, that offers storage solutions? Mainly I'm looking for shelving options to help declutter my bedroom.

(And I don't have anything against Ikea, I just know about them already. ;P)

I don't watch Jeopardy regularly but I've noticed that there seems to be a lot of Canadian contestants recently and they seem to be doing fairly well. A week or two or three ago there were a couple of different people from Vancouver. One was a student who won at least one game and I can't recall how well the other did. The current champion is a guy from Calgary. Also, it's interesting when they have questions about H.P. Lovecraft. There was one the other day and I remember seeing another one in the past few years.
